Items you will need:
Garden gloves
Spades, one large and one small
Shovel, large
Top soil or compost
Nectar plants or seeds
Regional plants or seeds
A place to buy plants
Water

Step 1. Preparing the area. Look for a desirable spot to locate your butterfly garden that receives a lot of sunlight. Remove rocks and plants from the area to have bare soil before adding top soil to the entire area.

Step 2. Adding the plants. Select the flowers that you want to populate the butterfly garden from two different categories. You can use seeds or seedlings for the garden. Find the plants that attract butterflies in your area and choose flowering plants that produce nectar. Look for a label that relates it as a butterfly plant.

If you do not know which plants are butterfly friendly, look for a butterfly specialist online or at your local nursery. Visit the garden department at your local nursery or home improvement store and look for ‘attracts butterflies’ signage.

Step 3. Choose a variety. The plants should be of various kinds with different shapes and colors. Group the smaller flora in the front with the taller stalks in the back. A few nectar plants include Common Milkweed, Brazilian Verbena and Butterfly Bush.

Step 4. Perform upkeep of the garden. Plant the seeds or seedlings of flowers and add a good amount of water to the area. Add a butterfly house or rocks to be used as protection for the insects.Take a look here to learn more: CSACC has wonderful Butterfly Gardeners!
